When you stop to think about it, fasteners are really pretty important little items. Without them, almost everything we use in day to day living would literally fall apart at the seams.

Self-sealing fasteners have an elastomeric insert or captive o-ring that provides simultaneous locking and sealing. There are two basic types of products: threaded fasteners and rivets. Both types of devices are made of aluminum, alloy steel, brass, bronze, carbon steel, molybdenum, stainless steel, plastic, or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Many self-sealing fasteners are treated with coatings or finishes that enhance corrosion resistance or provide other desirable characteristics. For example, aluminum fasteners are often anodized or finished with chrome. Copper fasteners are plated with silver or zinc. Black oxide, bright nickel, dull nickel, cadmium plating, chromium plating, and zinc plating are other common surface treatments. Passivation, the process of removing iron compounds from the surface of stainless steel, is used to form a thin, protective oxide layer that resists corrosion.

Brass Screws

Screws are spiral grooved fasteners that are driven into place via a rotating motion. There are a variety of screw types including a stainless steel screw, lead screw, captive screw, set screw, self drilling screw, sheet metal screw, lag screw, brass screw, and concrete screw. There are many systems for specifying the dimensions of screws. The United States has its own system of non-metric screws called the unified threat standard, but in much of the world the metric screw has displaced many older systems. Common metric screw measurements include an M3 thread that has a 0.5 mm pitch, M4: 0.7 mm, M6: 1 mm, M10-12: 1.5 mm, M14-16: 2 mm, M18-22: 2.5 mm. The primary purpose of screws is to act as a threaded fastener used to hold objects together. Screws are also used as a simple machine to translate torque into linear force.

Brass Nuts

Nuts are fasteners that are designed to fit around and secure a bolt or screw. The application determines the type of standard nut to use. In addition to type, nuts carry thread specifications and differ in terms of materials and approvals. Some nuts are made of metals such as aluminum, copper, or steel while others are made of non-metallic materials such as nylon. Nuts that are sold as assemblies include non-integral or secondary-material hardware, typically a washer or plastic insert, to improve mechanical performance. Vibration dampening nuts are designed to reduce or eliminate thread damage caused by long-term shaking or movement.

Threaded Inserts

Threaded inserts are blocks of material with a threaded hole that are pressed or molded into a part, usually made of a different material. The materials used for making threaded inserts are metals such as brass and copper, and plastics such as PVC and PTFE. There are many types of threaded inserts depending on the material used to create them. Examples include a threaded brass insert and a threaded plastic insert. A threaded brass insert has an internal thread and can be used as socket head or button head machine screw. A threaded plastic insert is a spiral ridge on the end of a pipe that enables pipes to be joined together. T A threaded brass insert has a deep groove for maximum pull out resistance. Knurling such as diamond, straight, and unidirectional are available in a threaded brass insert. A threaded plastic insert is more efficient than a threaded brass insert in the respect that it can withstand more pressure. Other threaded inserts are commonly available.

Brass Bolts

Bolts are threaded rods or pins that fasten objects together. They usually have a head at one end and a thread at the other. Bolts are secured by threaded nuts, and are available in both metric and non-metric designations. Metric nuts vary by inner diameter (ID) and are usually labeled with the letter “M” followed by the ID in millimeters (mm). For example, M.16 bolts have an inner diameter of 1.6 mm, while M2 bolts have an ID of 2.0mm. Non-metric bolts also vary by inner diameter, but are measured in inches (in) and eighths of inches. Although some English bolts are labeled by ID, others carry a specially-numbered designation. Examples include #0000, #000, #00, #0, #1, and #2 bolts.
